For almost 20 years, I’ve been working out on base, and yet, somehow, I had never been to the infamous Boathouse. I’d heard whispers, maybe even a few legends, but I had never actually made the trek. So when Katharina chose it for her senior session, I was equal parts excited and slightly panicked. Because here’s the thing—I like to see what I’m working with beforehand. A little visual prep never hurt anyone, right?

The first challenge? Figuring out how to get there. Enter Katharina’s mom, my official tour guide for the day. We met at South Base, and I followed her car through what felt like an endless maze of winding roads, engulfed in a fog so thick I half-expected to emerge in another dimension. I braced myself for a misty, mood-lit session… and then, like magic, the clouds vanished.

Suddenly, there it was: a charming old house perched above a peaceful little bay, bathed in the kind of golden sunlight that photographers dream about. The wind? Barely there. And what little breeze remained? Warm. Honestly, the whole scene felt like I had stepped into a secret pocket of perfection. (And now my "perfects" are invading my blog posts… send help.)

And then there was Katharina—an absolute dream to photograph. She was effortlessly graceful, her smile was pure sunshine, and every shot just… worked. No crowd on the beach. No harsh light. Just a perfect (ugh, there it is again) evening in a hidden gem of a location. Congrats Katharina!

So, note to self: 20 years on base, and I just discovered the Boathouse. But hey, better late than never, right?
