Some photography sessions take place in the usual tried-and-true locations, but every once in a while, a client comes along with a new idea that shakes things up in the best way possible. Enter Jordyn, my first senior client to choose the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden for her session, and let me tell you, this place did not disappoint.
Nestled in the foothills of Santa Barbara, this 78-acre living museum is home to over a thousand species of native California plants. From sprawling meadowlands to towering redwood groves, it’s like stepping into a dozen different worlds in one visit. And, of course, each one begged to be the perfect backdrop for Jordyn’s photos. I had to seriously restrain myself from stopping at every picturesque spot. Otherwise, we’d still be there, camera in hand, days later.
Jordyn’s session was a photographer’s dream. She effortlessly blended into the natural beauty around her, making it seem like she had been part of the landscape all along. We wandered through golden meadows where the light danced perfectly through the trees, ventured into the redwood forest that felt straight out of the Pacific Northwest (which, conveniently, happens to be one of Jordyn’s favorite places), and strolled through pathways lined with ancient oaks and vibrant wildflowers.
But let’s talk about the real MVP moment: the gnat incident. There we were, mid-session, and Jordyn suddenly struck a new pose. I thought, Wow, she’s really getting creative! Only to quickly realize she was, in fact, fending off an overly ambitious insect. Despite the surprise attack, she laughed it off with the grace of someone who has clearly mastered the art of staying cool under pressure (and, apparently, under siege by gnats).
Did I mention the humidity? Oh yes, the weather decided to add an extra challenge to the mix, turning our scenic adventure into a quasi-sweat lodge. But Jordyn? Not a hair out of place, not a single complaint, just pure, radiant confidence from start to finish.
Jordyn, from your laid-back energy to your effortless beauty, you made this session unforgettable. Congratulations on your senior year, and thank you for making my first session at the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden so special. You brought the magic, the humor, and the resilience (especially against tiny flying foes), and I couldn't have asked for a better person to explore this breathtaking location with.
Cheers to you, Jordyn, may your next adventure be just as epic as this one!
