When Abigail showed up with a bearded dragon named Beardy, I had a moment. Not a “ what do I do with this moment” moment. More like a “ why is this scaly creature looking at me like I owe him rent” moment. I’m just going to be honest. Reptiles creep me out a little. But professionalism wins, and Beardy turned out to be shockingly photogenic. I was both disturbed and impressed.

This was my first session featuring a lizard, and it went way smoother than expected. Beardy didn’t blink, didn’t bolt, and didn’t need snacks to cooperate. And the best part? He brought out something really special in Abigail. She’s naturally reserved and soft-spoken, but the second Beardy was in the frame, she lit up. That bond was real, and you could see it in every photo.

August gave us perfect golden light, and La Purisima Mission was its usual beautiful self. Between the warm tones, Abigail’s calm energy, and yes, Beardy’s lizard stoicism, the whole session felt relaxed and effortless. We tried shoulder perches, hand holds, and even a few shots where Beardy was the clear star of the show. He didn’t seem to mind.

If you’re thinking about bringing your pet to your session, absolutely do it. Just check ahead to make sure the location allows it. And maybe give me a heads-up if it has scales. I’ll prepare myself.

Thank you, Abigail, for trusting me to capture this special time.
