We had to reschedule this session because of the wind. It was the first time I had ever done that, and honestly, if I rescheduled every time it was windy on the Central Coast, I would never photograph anyone. Wind alone usually is not enough reason to change plans. But when the gusts reach “small toddler may become airborne” levels, it feels like the responsible thing to do.

And I am so glad we waited.

We ended up with the prettiest filtered light, just enough breeze to keep everyone comfortable, a shy toddler who slowly decided I was acceptable, and one very spirited one-year-old who may already be cooler than the rest of us. The kids had room to move, explore, and settle into the evening at their own pace. There was no need to force anything. I simply let them be themselves, which is usually where the best photographs begin.

This is one of the reasons I love photography so much. It freezes time for just a second. It lets us hold onto the good moments a little longer, leave some of the messy ones behind, and keep moving forward with something tangible from a season that passed much too quickly.

Thank you, VonProtz family, for trusting me with this little piece of your story.
